Equity Learning Pods

Providing Equity. Preventing Learning Loss.

The disruption of COVID-19 is creating learning loss and disengagement from which we may never recover and we are at risk of losing more youth from graduating. The Freedom Scholars Learning Center wants to help stop and close this growing achievement gap.

What is an Equity Learning Pod?

It’s a safe, quiet learning space where scholars can come to do their remote learning. The pod is staffed by trained educators who keep scholars engaged, help troubleshoot any issues, and offer academic and emotional support.

Thanks to our generous partners at Asbury First Methodist Church, we have a beautiful space to host our youth.

Can any student apply?

We are currently serving RCSD middle school students, grades 6-8.

What is the schedule?

The pods will be operating 3 days a week, M-T-W from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.

The program will start Monday, February 8th and will run for 10-weeks, ending in April. Depending on grant funding, we may be able to renew through the end of the school year.

Is there a charge to attend?

No. Thanks to generous donors, this service is no cost to City families.

What about COVID?

We are following all CDC and NYSDOH school re-opening guidelines: There will be daily health check ins, a restricted number of socially-distanced scholars per room, and mandatory mask wearing.

What supplies will I need?

Our space has free WiFi. You will need to bring your Chromebook and headphones (if you have them) with you each time. In addition, bring any school materials that are normally required to do your work. The pod will supply basic materials such as pencils and paper.

What about meals?

Thanks to Foodlink, breakfast, lunch and a lite snack will be provided to all participants.

How do I apply?

Please fill out the application below. We are currently able to take 20-30 students while remaining COVID safe.
